I faced this same problem. The only way around it (that I could think of
at least) is to buy a second hdd and install whatever distro you want on
that and use either GRUB as the boot loader on the main hdd or a boot floppy
to start-up Linux. So far this has worked well, particularly using Lycoris
which automatically recognizes and mounts NTFS partitions.

I am presently using Red Hat 7.3 as a dual-booting
system with Windows XP on an emachines T1400 computer.
The computer came only with restore CDs (not
installation CDs) for Windows XP and to create a new
partition I had to buy PartitionMagic 7.0. This is
because tools like fips do not work with the NTFS
partitions that Windows XP gives by default. Since I
had only the restore CDs (and not the installation
CDs), I could not reinstall Windows XP using a FAT32
file system.
I feel that an open source software package like
PartitionMagic is needed that is able to work with
NTFS partitions in order to simplify the dual-booting
process for users (at no extra cost). Maybe Red Hat
can develop something like that.
I am sorry if this is not the exact forum for posting
this message---but I am a member of other mailing
lists too and I still had no idea where to make this
request.
Siv Raman

I just gotta jump in here;
Often times using a duel boot setup time ago, using the "add hardware"
wizard
in M$ 98 would completely destroy my linux partitons. I sincerely hope that
the destruction and agony M$ has caused through the years is never forgotten
and is well documented.
