(1) You can prevent innocents from being exposed to things that they should
not be.
In one case a 7 year old girl did a search on "kittens" and stumbled across
a very graphic site. In another example the site www.googlr.com had a very
graphic picture that jumped up on the screen followed by anti-government
propaganda. It is easy for kids to mistype google and end up there.
(2) You can use it to keep the students focused on the task at hand...
wrestlemania or algebra
playmate of the month or Abe Lincoln
smashing pumpkins or term paper
None of these things are necessarily "bad", they just don't relate to what
needs to get done at that particular moment and that particular place.
That's why if we have to filter we filter with open lists that we can tailor
to local needs.
