As I understand the GPL, (IANAL)

1: I write software. I have the copyright and can license it GPL
2: I release.

3A: I can charge for my software.

3B: Someone can take my source and add to it and release GPL.
They can charge for whatever they release but must make the source available and can not change the license on my parts.


3C: I can license my parts to someone else closed source. This does not change anything that was released GPL.

If part of my software is a definition of the format the software reads, I control it. Someone can extend it but they have to mark their changes. That gives me some control over changes by others.


I can not have all changes sent back to me.

Thanks for asking the question Anthony. I want to be clear also. This is a list about Open Source and I should understand what that is. :-)
