Re: [OS:N:] Seniors and open source



I've narrowed down a synopsis for a basic computing class at the Senior
Center. Please, let me know if this is on track. Sounds like the hints
they have been giving suggest to start very basic. So I've attached a
SC-C101 class objective "BasicComputerConcepts.html".

Program Overview:
Introduction to Basic computer concepts with emphasis on the use of Open Sourced software to prepare people interested in learning how to use and operate a home computer effectively. An introduction of Open Sourced software will enable the student to use their knowledge on a wide range of applications in use today. Coursework for the program has been designed to focus on six areas of study that will build the student's knowledge of basic computer operations.
These areas include:

    Basics of Computer Operation.
    Foundations of Basic File Structures.
    How to create and save an Electronic Document.

Course Description:
This course is focused on the basic use of the computer as an authoring tool. Instruction will develop as students learn to use their particular skills, using the computer and Open Sourced programs to conduct basic computer operations.

Course Objectives:
By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • (1) Use of the basic computer functions.
    1. A. Starting and stopping the computer.
      B. Learn how to use keyboard and mouse to navigate the computer desktop.
      C. Basic file structures and operations: Creating, Saving, Deleting files.
  • (2) How to create an electronic document.
    1. A. Learn to start and stop basic programs.
      B. Introduction to the Open Office program.
      C. Saving and Opening existing documents.
