Programs which are not yet PAM-aware still need crypt().  Ideally
this should be the same version of crypt() to make sure there are
no compatibility problems.

That's probably unavoidable.  Adding PAM support to applications which
were not designed for it is not trivial.  If someone asks why xxx has
no PAM support - say "just do it" :-).
