undefined symbol "stat" in shared libraries, redhat 5.2, pam 0.66

does anyone have any clues?  i can't reboot or afford to log out any of
the shells :-)

/lib/libpam.so.0: undefined symbol: stat

when, for example, logging in or running the su command.
