X uses a lot of ressources, thus I don't want to jump in graphical mode, if I
want to launch a very long computation, for example. I do a lot of things in
console mode, and don't need X so much.
However, sometimes, I need X to see pictures, for example. And it is also
convenient to have a windowed environment. That's why I like being able to
launch X or shut it down whenever I want. On another machine, which has much
more ram/CPU, and is used by a lot of other people than me, I use gdm and
that's fine.
