Tracking down limit issues

Hey,
It seems since we have started using Centos5/REHL5 we have encountered
a number of occasions where we have had to change the default limits
under /etc/security/limits.conf.
The same application worked fine on Centos4/REHL4 with out any
modifications.
Anyways the question I have is, what is the best way to determine if the
app is failing due to a limit restriction ? There does not seem to be
able log entries indicating so.
