portmap won't install

I can't get portmap to compile/install. I am using Red Hat 4.2 with
kernel 2.0.30.

When I try to use the package manager with -i I get..

rpm -iv portmap-4.0-3.src.rpm
Installing portmap-4.0-3.src.rpm

but then when I try to check it..

rpm -V portmap-4.0-3.src.rpm
package portmap-4.0-3.src.rpm is not installed

And I can find no trace of rpc on the system.

I notice that this file has .src.rpm extension - is this different from a
standard .rpm file? When I use the -vv option (very verbose) some of the
output is..

D: installing archive into ///usr/src/redhat/SOURCES
D: file "portmap-4.0-1.spec" complete
D: file "portmap-4.0-linux.patch" complete
D: file "portmap.init" complete
D: file "portmap_4.tar.gz" complete

This would tend to suggest that I need to go and apply the unzip/untar
the archive, apply the patch file and then compile... ? But didn't get
any joy there either (make fails with an error message).

There is a .spec file in /usr/src/redhat/SPECS (which I presume is the
thing that controls the compiling/installing of the package.. But it
would appear that this is not being "excuted" by rpm ?

I have sucessfully installed other packages on the system. I really like
easy install mechanism, but only when they work!
I have just recompiled the kernel to include support for NFS - which is
why I am faffing around with portmap - and it just occured to me that
could that have changed something on the system, like a config file for
rpm where it looks for spec files??

Any other ideas thoughts would be welcome.

Thanks
Paul
