Redhat 5.0 Crashing at SCSI Bus Probe

I started with Redhat 4.2 installed fine. I'm new to Linux so, knowing
that 5.0 was to be released shortly, I just used it to experiment on and
wasn't worried about whether or not I kept this installation. Regardless,
everything ran fine. When 5.0 was released (yesterday) I installed it over
the 4.2 installation, formatting the old partitions. After install and
first bootup, it finds the adapter (Adaptec 2940) and then it searches for
devices on it which is a Seagate 1 Gig drive (not sure of model off hand)
During the search, it gets a general protection error and seg faults. This
doesn't crash the bootup but when it trys to mount the drive (sda1) during
the "mounting local filesystems" routine, it hangs. I was able to
disconnect the drive and boot but I still get the seg fault during device
probing. I removed the /dev/sda1/ entry from /etc/fstab so it would boot.
I'm wondering if anyone has had similar problems as this wasn't a problem
with 4.2 and suddenly is with 5.0
