Yes, but it's still sending out text/enriched messages, which are
better, but not by much...

You don't say what it *does* do. Does it boot to DOS by default? Does it
hang at the LILO prompt? Does it fill your screen with 1s and 0s?
I don't know whether the whitespace between "default" and "=" is a problem.
Try it without. Actually, since linux is the first entry in the config file,
you don't need the default line at all.
Trying the obvious question: have you rerun lilo after modifying lilo.conf?
