network problem

Questions:
Why can't my RH box ping itself?
     Why can't I create a loopback interface?
Why do most messages appear in /var/log/messages twice?
Where do those socks go that dissapear in the wash?

Thanks,
Tom

I installed RH 4.2, and configured networking during the install. After
install, I decided that I wanted to change the IP address on the LAN card.
I deleted the LAN card using the GUI, and rebooted. Upon reboot, I
assigned the new IP address.

Ever since then, I have had a problem pinging myself. I can reach other
hosts, but it frustrates me that there is some networking problem.

If I try to ifconfig lo0 with an IP address, I get an error message...

I have tried any number of solutions, and find myself only frustrated.

Substantial config info follows.......
