The RH Installation Guide suggests creating multiple partitions but does
not give much guidance on relative sizes apart from:
swap 1x - 2x physical memory
/ 50-80 MB
/usr 200-500 MB
/home ???
/usr/local ???
/usr/src ???
/tmp ???
The manual briefly describes the purpose of each of the above but for
someone unfamiliar with Linux its hard to even _guess_ at how much to
allocate to /home versus /usr/local versus /tmp, etc. (oops, should I
say and so on and so on to avoid confusion with /etc?).
I have a trusty old 1.6G drive and partitioned it:
swap 100 (I have 64 MB physical memory)
/ 80
/usr 600
/home 200
/usr/local 200
/usr/src 200
/tmp 200
I installed RH5.0 lock, stock and barrel (minus CD 2) and intend to do
g++ and Tcl/Tk work on it.
Is my partitioning nuts, reasonable, brilliant? I'd like, if necessary,
to fix it now while I don't have much invested.
