Some guidelines from Solaris, & some other stuff to think about...
swap space: no more than 3x your physical memory...
/ partition - I usually give about 100M... the stuff under /var
has all your messges, logs, etc, & can outgrow the usual
default 50M or so...
/usr - probably 75% of your installed software will go here
- the other 75% will probably be split between /usr/local
and /opt
/tmp - use the same rule as for swap....
/home - user accounts usually go here... If you're the only user,
200M is probably more than enough... If you have
multiple accounts, try to give about 50M per account
(some will use, most won't)
/usr/src - your surce trees may or may not go here... RedHat
usually puts SRPMS under usr/src/redhat/SRPMS
here's a copy of my own "df -k", but note I only have a 1.2G drive,
and I'm beginning to run out of space... I felt that it
would be easier to have a single large partition than to have
to worry about maybe running out of space... someday, when
I add more HD, I will just mount it under a directory
somewhere....

results of a "du -s" run from the / partition... I imagine
I'm approximately typical.... note, I left out the remotely
mounted machines, except for the import directory which
I use quite often... It is a common network drive on
both the LINUX, and Windoze sides of this machine...
