I have found MetroX to be a faster X server than XFree86, at least on my
particular configuration. I do a lot of work over PPP, and the windows update
quicker under MetroX. This setup includes a Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM video
card.

However, setup of MetroX is not particularly easy (I had to set up MetroX's
config file by hand, as it would not auto-recognize the Stealth card).

Ironically, although I prefer MetroX's speed over XFree86, I'm using XFree86 on
my other home machine. Why? Because MetroX refuses to recognize the ATI 3D
Pro Turbo card I have on that box.

I'd suggest installing and testing each one for your particular configuration
and seeing which one works best for you. Note that you can't have both
installed simultaneously, as there is some commonality of filenames in both
packages.
