Re: XServer / startx

Cd to /usr/X11R6/bin and do a ls -l XF86*. Do you see something like
this:

-rws--x--x 1 root root 1636364 Jun 3 1997 XF86_Mach32
-rws--x--x 1 root root 1751204 Jun 3 1997 XF86_Mach64
-rws--x--x 1 root root 1512312 Jun 3 1997 XF86_Mach8
-rws--x--x 1 root root 1759808 Jun 3 1997 XF86_Mono
-rws--x--x 1 root root 1693012 Jun 3 1997 XF86_P9000
-rws--x--x 1 root root 2143204 Jun 3 1997 XF86_S3
-rws--x--x 1 root root 1890512 Jun 3 1997 XF86_S3V
-rws--x--x 1 root root 2499156 Jun 3 1997 XF86_SVGA

Notice that the suid bit is set for all of them. This is a security risk,
so version 3.3 no longer has the suid bits set, and I believe 5.0 comes
with this newer version. Quit possibly when they tried to fix that hole,
they introduced a bug. If you do not have the suid bit set, try setting
it temporarily for the server you are using and see what happens.

Just a thought.
