To anyone who plans on downloading the FTP tree from ftp.redhat.com,
A few days ago, I downloaded the whole i386 directory from
ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/redhat-5.0/. I have a 28.8k modem, so it took me
TWENTY HOURS! Okay, no problem, so what? Twenty hours is okay if I do it
once right? WRONG!! After DAYS of trying to figure out why the installer
was giving me "signal 11 error" and a whole bunch of other errors during
the "scanning for RPMs" stage, I found out on the USENET that lots of the
packages are CORRUPTED (about 58 I think). I had no way of finding out
which ones though, because I don't have Linux installed, so I can't run
rpmtool on them. So, I am now downloading the whole thing again from a
site that I know does not have corrupted RPMs (ftp.engr.uark.edu).
I cannot even begin to express the frustration and disappointment I have
for RedHat. I am sure many other people tried to do the same thing as me.
RedHat has given RedHat Linux a bad image with something so incredibly
stupid in their haste to get 5.0 out. I hope this helps other people who
plan on downloading RedHat Linux 5.0. *Sigh*.
