are worked out of their 5.0 release (especially if you're new to Linux).   I
see nothing 5.0 offers that would cause 4.2 to be "obsolete" or inferior to
5.0.

As for Applix, it seems to run OK *if* you have sufficient RAM.  On my 16MB
machine, I'm lucky to get it to do anything more than a simple document or
spreadsheet.  On the 64MB machine, it runs like a charm.
