RedHat 5.0 boot problem - SOLVED!

I was having trouble with both the RedHat 5.0 (Intel) installation
boot disk and the bootable CD. RedHat 4.2 worked fine. The boot floppy
came to "Now Booting the Kernel" and the computer reset. The boot CD
just did "L 80 80 80 80 ..." until I hit reset. I had previously sent
mail to redhat-install-list and redhat-bugs, with no solutions given.
Here's a workaround.

The answer lay in the Knowledge Base FAQ #190.

http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/faq-details.phtml?id=190

Follow the instructions there, with the following notes:

Build a kernel which you know should boot. I actually just took
the 5.0 kernel-sources and kernel-headers RPMs, installed them on my 4.2
box, and then configured them. Make sure to leave in RAM disk support,
and to compile in any drivers you will need during the install. (like
any SCSI cards, etc). Compile with "make zImage". You may have trouble
fitting the kernel on the floppy. I have no IDE devices so I just took
out IDE support and I was fine. (perhaps that is a clue to my
problem with RedHat's kernel?)

mcopy arch/i386/boot/zImage a:/vmlinuz

Then reboot, and install RedHat as normal.

Be sure to follow the instructions in the FAQ about copying your kernel
off the floppy and onto the hard disk after the install, since the one
that gets installed is likely going to fail in the same manner as the
boot floppy kernel.
