control-panel problem on laptop....

hello,
i wanted to launch the control panel for my redhat5.0 system on my laptop but get
only an error:
** ERROR **: unable to find a usable depth
but as can be seen in the result of xdpyinfo, i have at least 4 colours.... that
should be enough (i am running the laptop in 800x600 vga16-Xdriver)

so what going wrong and what alternatives exist?
