Upgrade not finding current packages [4.2 to 5.0]

Hello,

I had recently used a FTP install to install redhat-4.2. I had not taken
the time to change anything on the machine since then, and now want to
Upgrade it to 5.0.

When I try to upgrade, it selects no packages for upgrade and jumps
immediately to installing boot loader.

I did CTL-ALT-F2 and got a root prompt, from there I found that it had
indeed mounted /dev/hda1 [my redhat 4.2 partition].

Here is my drive layout:

/dev/hda1: Linux Native --> entire linux 4.2 install
/dev/hda2: DOS partition, nothing installed on it, not bootable
/dev/hdb1: Linux Swap
/dev/hdb2: Linux Native
/dev/hdc1: Linux Swap
/dev/hdc2: Linux native

One interesting thing is it never asks me about the location of my current
redhat install. It doesnt' ask anything about any of my mount points
either.

notice that even though there are linux native partitions on hdb and hdc,
they are not used for the 4.2 install, or the 5.0 upgrade.

thanks in advance for your help,
