ifup problem....

 hello,
i am trying to get networking to work on my portable computer:
when starting i see the pcmcia module starting, saying that it is setting up eth0,
the PC-card is correctly recognized, and then when executing the start sequence (the
/etc/pcmcia/network script), in /var/log/messages, i see the following error: usage:
ifup <device name>

calling it by hand: ifup eth0 gives the same result, so what's going wrong 
here?

System is a Medion Laptop with Xircom CEM28 card and redhat5.0
