get_kernel_sys failed

I'm a relative newcomer to Linux (better than novice; approaching amateur
level :-))

I recently recompiled a kernel and turned off all the module options (the
computer I'm using is an old clunker that doesn't need much in the way of
fancy options). On booting, everything seems to go well, but I get an error
message that says

"get_kernel_sys failed: Cannot find kernel symbols!"

The wording sounds like something serious is wrong, but the programs I use
seem to run fine.

I'd still like to fix the little bugs though; what does this message
indicate and what needs to be done to fix it?

TIA

Paul Greene
