conf.modules?

I have been setting up RH 4.2 on a 486 machine to use as a dial-up
masquerading server and mail server. I have a couple problems that if
anyone could help with I'd would mutch appreciate it.
The problem is in recognizing my NE2000 clone ethernet. I can't find any
documentation on how to use conf.modules. I can get the modules loaded (8390
and ne) by executing modprobe -t net ne io=0x300. How do I set up RHL so that
when the machine boots, the ethernet gets detected and set up properly?
Another problem I have is in that when I build a new kernel I still get
version information errors on modules. I have the new kernel's modules in
/lib/modules/2.0.30 (with old ones removed) and the new kernel in /boot. Is
there another file I have to move somewhere for the module symbol
information?
TIA
Happy Holidays
