Thanks for all the help on this subject.  I've pretty much decided that
I'm going to try just getting a bare-bones install with xfree86 and
emacs, and then if there's any chance, ill try to install gcc.  It's not
really important, since if it doesnt work, im just going to get an old
550 meg hd.
