Kernel panic.. Can't mount root fs

Hi everybody,
	I have attempted to re-compile my kernel on my RHL 4.2 systems,
and
have gotten the same results both times. During the kernel boot-up 
messages, I first get "Can't get IRQ 14 for ide0", then I later get
"Kernel panic... Can't mount root fs".

Anyone else had this problem, or know how to fix it?
