Have you checked out where your CDrom plugs into your system?  Is it on
the normal IDE chain?  Is it attacehd to a custom card?  Is is attached
to a propriatary controller card?  I beleive that the FX001x cards are
propriatary....,,,  I have of Linux rejecting a cdrom before, but that
was like a panasonic, or a something.  A 24 Speed.  I can get 24 speed
Acer cdroms for between 70 & 75 a piece [us dollars].  I don't know if
that the _best_ price, but I would bet that if I can do that, then you
can find a damn fast one for around that price delivered.
