xterm problem getting current directory

shell-init: could not get current directory: getwd: cannot access parent
 directories
job-working-directory: could not get current directory: getwd: cannot
 access parent directories

 - What's this indicate? This is in the Lesstif WM (the desktop without all
 the annoying logos ; >).
