Re: what's the best chip for RH?

I just want to throw my 2 cents into this discussion. first off, I
seriously doubt (okay 99.8 percent sure) linux has no use for mmx
extensions right now, course they could be added in, but I've heard nothing
of it. theres no software that I know of that can use it (correct me if
there is) so pretty much the k6 (which I think is a great chip itself) is
really going to have no greater impact on linux, of course the pentium pro
will do great since its just plain speed w/o extras (and yes if you get a
kernel to support multiple CPUS then it will definilty increase) though the
PII is obviously going to be the fastest of them all, cost is a
consideration and the 233 will be no faster (not marginally at least)
against the k6, now the 266 you might see some difference but the real chip
to stand way out would be the PII 300, of course that $1938 (in lots of
1,000 of course, what is the individual price anyways?) might not be in
anyones price range :) if cost is a concern go with the k6 unless you can
find a p. pro for cheaper or plan on multiple CPUS, and the PII will only
do you good if you want the lastest and the greatest, the fastest (at a
price), you would rather use a intel 8088 (wait that can't run linux...)
then any other non-intel cpu, or you want to get something that will
support the upcoming p7 (and p8) of course that depends on whether intel
will play nice and stick with socket 1 :-)
okay so that was a litttle more then 2 cents...

Subject: what's the best chip for RH?

Hi all,

I wonder which chip will max the RH performance:

Pentium II class (includes K6 and 686MX) or
Pentium Pro

I understand that Pentium II class has a more advanced design and MMX
enhencement, but Pentium Pro has high speed cache which is more profound
to unix OS.

Thanks for your opinon.
