I imagine you need to get the 3.1.5 version of Metro X that is appropriate
for the distribution you have, unmask that against your CD version. And
then get the 3.1.7 version and unmask that against the 3.1.5 version.

If you want to ungrade XFree, you only need the fonts, devel and libs for
XFree86, plus the base XFree86-3.3.1 rpm. BUT be aware that the last of
these requires you to update PAM to the latest version (I think this only
applies to RedHat 4.1, could be wrong though - it'll tell you when you
try to update) - this can be avery traumatic experience !!

If you do update PAM (I think the version shipped with RedHat 4.2 is OK)
you will also need to update *every* program that appears in
/etc/pam.conf, ie login, telnet, su, ftpd, infact everything that asks for
any sort of verification or password. You can find out which packages
these come from fairly easily (the rpm command). Until these are updated
you will *not* be able to login - so leave a few root shells open !

If you need to update PAM I can provide you with a list of
packages that need updating.

good luck
