"Unable to open initial console" -- help!

I just installed finished installing RedHat 4.2 on a clean system 
(486/66 w/20MB RAM).  After I rebooted, it got just past the point 
where it detects the hard drives, then gives me the message "Unable 
to open an initial console".  There have been a couple of 
other messages posted about this, but I was unable to find a 
solution.  Any suggestions?
