C-Kermit and RPM

(I cannot tell if this is more install or rpm-related)

I fetched the two C-Kermit 6.12? release 7 rpm's (i386 and src) from
columbia (under archives, not linux?) from a Win3.1 box (Linux not on-line
yet) and the damn thing truncated so badly that it overwrote the i386 rpm
with the src rpm. So I fixed that but before I noticed the problem:

I put (what turned out to be the src) rpm on the linux box as something
like 7.rpm and installed it with "rpm -vih 7.rpm" and it printed a
line-full of hash marks and returned the command prompt. But when I went
to inquire (e.g., "rpm -qa | grep -i kermit"), it reports that kermit is
not loaded. However at least some of the files were installed.

What gives? Can you not install the src without the bins? Shouldn't it at
least give me a cryptic error message if something is wrong or am I missing
something? Does anyone know if the files under archive at columbia are the
lastest and greatest (and compatible with the version of rpm shipped in
RH4.1)?

Thanks.
