RH 4.2 Unable to open initial console

Hi everybody,

I have just installed RH4.2. LILO is installed on a diskette.
Apparently, the installation process was ok.

Now when I try to boot, the Adaptec 2940UW and the attached devices, in
particular the two HDs, are found and the partitions are recognized.
Next, something is told about the old root being unmounted okay and then
that the initial console cannot be open. At that point the system stops.

Could anybody gives me a cue about what could be wrong.
