My Dell laptop also uses a NeoMagic chipset. If I remember correctly, I
was able to run at the default 640x480 with 16 colors. I'm running RH 4.1
of Linux. The XFree package did not support the NeoMagic chipset. I'm
not sure if the latest version of XFree works either. To run at a higher
resolution (800x600) with more colors, I had to purchase Accelerated X.
The latest version will set you back $199. OOOOCH! The performance is
great though.
Even with Accelerated X there are bugs. On the Dell, I have to hit a key
sequence that will force the video card into other modes.
