Hi everybody,
Recently, I have tried to upgrade the XFree86 server from v3.2 (shipped
with RH4.2) to v3.3 (RH4.2 errata). What I did was to download the XFree
files from the errata dir to a local dir, point glint to this dir and
hit the upgrade button. What resulted was an unusable X server: it came
up with a vaguely coloured screen, a cross pointer that never turns to
the disc shape and it stops here. Following that, I have been able
neither to get 3.3 working, nor to re-install 3.2 properly and I had to
re-install the whole stuff from the CD.
Since that time, I have seen a message on this list which said to use
the following command :
rpm -Uhv *.rpm
is that any safer than the use of glint.
On the other hand, I have also seen somewhere else that a pre- and
post-inst script were to be run. A what time? Is there anything that
should be done before the above rpm command? I guess not.
And, by the way, is the Millenium really better supported by the 3.3 as
compared to the 3.2. Otherwise, I can well stay with the 3.2
Thank you for your help,
Camille.
