So far, no good. I did the make mrproper before I did the make config. After 
the above sequence, with the make mrproper inserted first, I still get one 
depmod "unresolved symbols" message, for /lib/modules/2.0.30/net/bsd_comp.o. 
What is this module? I don't have anything in either of the networking sections 
of make config set to compile as a module. The only other modules I have are a 
couple of the file systems and an Iomega scsi adapter (this is a very minimal 
system on my laptop). And I'm still getting modprobe errors on bootup....
