Oh, you really should have said so. :) In Guatemala, Cybernet has been
working with cable modem technology for about a year and a half now. The
"cable modem," which I'm told is more correctly referred to as a "bridge"
between broadband and Ethernet, does require an Ethernet card to be
installed in the computer.
However, the card can be any card, with whatever driver makes it happy.
We've successfully used 3Com 3c509's and 3c900's, for example. We've also
successfully used (about 50 times) cards that cost $12 where we don't know
who makes them or how they work but which will install as generic NE2000.
Worry not; configure your Ethernet as always, and plug it in.
Oh, and by the way, if you have access to this kind of service, you're
going to love it. Cybernet gives me dedicated access to a 4 Mbps loop (I
average 512 Kbps real bandwidth) for $90 per month, and I love it.
