I have been fighting this for about 3 days. I have an ET4000w32
card. Under the older version it worked fine. I cannot get any kind
of display when I do it is out of phase, double images. I used
XF86Setup and the graphics setup worked fine but the server will not
work correctly all it does is turn my monitor to power save mode.
If you find out anything please let me know.

Greetings,
From what I read, it looks a bit like the problem I experienced lately while re-installing RHL 3.0.3 / XFree86 3.1.2. Previous installations on my 486/66 with a Tseng Lab ET 4000 (ISA-bus 16 bit card from early 92) went all perfect, but now I had a Diamond Stealth 64DRAM in it. During setup of the XFree86, the autoprobe made my monitor go into sleepmode and locked up the whole thing. From the book "Red Hat Linux Unleashed" (Sam's Publishing) I learned that autoprobing is anything but infallable. I managed to get through it eventually by avoiding the autoprobe session, and setting all necessary values manually from the card's and the monitor's manual. Now it works just fine. Perhaps, this is what's happening with your system? For what it's worth you could perhaps try to setup the card's values manually. Make sure you have a lot of info at hand, because the configurator is very demanding ;)
Again, I'm no expert, and the problems may be completely different, as the situations are as well.. Just thought that you might give it a try. I hope you manage yourself through ;)
Best Regards,
Kwido - It's a state of mind.
