Not exactly true. Just make sure the partition containing the kernel
is below the 1024 cyl. The rest of the system may be anywhere on the disk.
A sample configuration might be
/boot on /dev/hdb1 (10meg, well below 1024)
swap on /dev/hdb2 (32meg or whatever you need)
/ on /dev/hdb3 (rest of the disk)
