Configuration and documentation

While reading the man pages on various subjects, I've noticed
quite often that they are obsolete and the current documentation
is in "Texinfo". I understand what TeX is (although I've never
tried to use it nor to write any TeX documents), but have been
unable to figure out how to access the updated documentation.
Can you offer any guidance?

Also, one other thing. I'm running XFree86 and TheNextStep.
After making some changes to my desktop (most notably to kill
FvwmButtons), I've selected the option to save the desktop to
.newinitrc (or whatever the file is: I'm away from my Linux
machine right now). I've even tried copying the file to my home
directory and renaming it appropriately. However, whenever I
restart X, it always returns to the way it was.

IOW, how do I set the run-time desktop defaults? My monitor,
video card and such are fine and work great. I'm asking about
controlling what programs start automatically, default cursors,
etc.

I realize that I probably need to re-read the XF86 docs, but
so far, I've been unable to find this. If I can figure this
out, it will put me well ahead on learning the rest.

Thanks!
