SCSI DAT Jukebox

Can anyone help a new-to-linux guy get his tape drive working?
My SCSI card is a NCR/Symbios Logic 810, and the tape drive is a
Conner DAT Autoloader (with the 4-tape cartridge).
Here are the symptoms:
- Lilo seems to report that it recognizes the device (it find the
"ARCHIVE PYTHON" from the scsi controller at the appropriate id, lun,
etc *&* sees it as device st0).
- I did MAKEDEV st0
With a tape loaded into the drive manually (not just sitting in the
cartridge):
- cpio reports 'I/O error'
- tar hangs with no messages
Ok, so far I would guess I need to tweak the kernel somehow, BUT
Lone-Tar has absolutely no problem whatever tar-ring to and from the
tape (I have it set to use /dev/st0). I am doing a 'Master Backup' as
we speak, and have successfully done selective writes and restores
through Lone-Tar. BTW, it is reporting 22 MB per minute, twice as fast
as my SCO box at work using Lone-Tar, an HP Sure-Store on an Adaptec
2940 with a similar system load!
That Lone-Tar has no problem makes me think that the drive must be
installed properly.... What gives?
Thanks for any help,
