backing up kernel before recompiling

I have been told that it is a good idea to back up the kernel and then
add the backup to lilo.conf so if I mess up the kernel, I can still boot
up the old one. How do I go about this, do I just make a copy of
/boot/vmlinuz? What do I need to put in /etc/lilo.conf ?

Thanks for any help,
Geoffrey Hing
