It depends on what kind of backing up you are talking about. For my needs,
I have found my ZIP drive very handy , because I'll often go to the RedHat
ftp site to grab an upgrade, and I can use the zip drive to back up
important configuration files, downloaded RPMs, and my home directory. I
find it more than adequate.But it is obviously insufficient if you want
to use it to backup your entire hard drive , or /usr or something.
I also believe that there is support for other
drives such as Syquest and Shark (though I'm not sure.) these drives have
better storage capacity than the ZIP drive.
You can not use a printer and parallel port drive at the same time,ie when
you mount the zip drive, you don't have access to the printer till you
unmount the drive. But on a single user system, this really isn't a
problem.
