As suggested on the redhat-list, it might be libXpm that was
causing the trouble, so I rpm -e'd both packages, the xpm and
xpm-devel and reinstalled from two RPMS which I got from
RedHat's FTP - but (as usual) to no avail.
Also tried the newer contributed version (xpm-3.4j-1).
So it's not xpm (either) that is the root of the evil here.
Just wanted to point that out, so we maybe can focus on some
other (more likely?) issues.
For the record I've also got rxvt-2.18 compiled and tried without
success.
Summary: it's neither caused by hardware, nor rxvt/xpm/xserver.
