I use an Exabyte 8500 SCSI-2 Tape drive, in conjunction with the 'dump'
program. I back up my entire drive every week (about 700Mb of info total),
and instead of replacing the older backups with the newer ones, I append
the newer ones after the older ones. I can basically make 11-12 full
backups on a 7Gb uncompressed tape cartridge, so that if  need a file dated
2 months ago, I can always go back to it if needed.
