This error usually means that the interrupt for the PS/2 mouse is in
use by something else.  Type "cat /proc/interrupts" to see what is
being used.  I think IRQ 12 is what the PS/2 mouse wants.

On the laptop I have (IBM Thinkpad 755CD) the PCMCIA drivers end up
using IRQ 12 and I got the same error you are.  Once I reconfigured
the PCMCIA not to use IRQ 12, everything worked fine!

The Red Hat kernel should have the PS/2 mouse support in it so you don't
need to recompile the kernel.  You just need to figure out why the X
server can't allocate it to use.
