Connecting to the Internet with Linux.......

Hi All.
Could someone tell me what to do?
I use minicom to dial my ISP up, I successfully connect, then I enter my
user name and password.
I am then given a menu where my only option other than disconnecting is to
select ppp. So I select ppp.
Then I get a message that my ISP is switching to PPP....
Now what? In my netconfigurator I have set up a ppp0 device.....I have
activated it before connecting but all I get is a bunch of weird symbols on
my screen, and then the connection is terminated.
I try to use my browser but nothing happens....
