REdhat 4.2 and Laptop installation via PCMCIA CD-ROM

I am new to Linux and Unix. When a friend asked me to
help him install the OS on his laptop Extensa 510 via
a 8x Panasonic CD-ROM connected to the laptop using a
PCMCIA card, I had no idea how difficult it would
be.I am recording this here partly to seek the help
of more capable minds that I. If you can solve this
problem, please do not hesitate to email
me(leon2 rocketmail com). Thanks
Anyway, this is what happened. I partitioned
the disk as required by the manual and create the
boot and supplemental disks required for the
installation. It started out fine until I got to the
point where they asked if I had to choose the CD-Rom
modules. I tried SCSI but it does not work because i
could not find the drivers for it. so I tried others
and happily found the Soundblaster/Panasonic. I
selected that but it returned me a message: "Mount
failed: Block device required. I could not mount a CD
on device /dev/scd0."
I don't know what to do: There was no way out
literally so I CRTL-ALT-DEL and the system reboot.
Turned out that it rebooted so at the boot prompt, i
typed rescue and enter. This time, it returns to
where I stopped the last time. Do you have any SCSI
adpters. I tried No and the whole GUI lifts! and end
with a # prompt below. I tried every unix command I
can remember but does not work so i typed exit and it
does!
Along the way of trobleshooting, I peruse many
books on installing linux and tried all sorts of
methods (such as autobooting through the CD). doen's
work!
If you know what's wrong, please email me. I
will be very grateful. Thanks!!

Regards,
James Leong
