Hehehe...  Laptops on Linux is whole other world.
I know, I've set up half a dozen or so.
Your problem is two-fold.  First, I doubt that your
boot floppies loaded PCMCIA.  This would definitely
be a problem, and you need a boot floppy whose kernel
has this in it.  Even getting that though, likely isn't enough.
You need to make sure that this CD-ROM is supported.
(i.e. What is the PCMCIA card that came with it?)
If you have any other laptops running Linux, put it
in one and reboot it.  Does the PCMCIA probe recognize it?
If not, all is not lost, but you're in really deep.  If you have
limited experience with Linux and this card isn't already
supported and identified, you're probably in way over your
head -- no offense, mind you.
