I have a SB 16 PnP that is working correctly.
Although it is integrated on a Dell XPS motherboard, it appears to be
recognized by Win95 and Linux just like a PnP card - but no CD
interface, so if that is part of the problem, I don't think I can
help.
Here's what I did to get going under both:
The autoexec.bat in DOS 6.2 and Win95 has these settings - yours
might be different if you already have a number of peripherals
installed, but I think they are pretty standard for SB:
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6
This means SB I/O port 220, IRQ 5, low DMA 1, high DMA 5 (ignore T6)
MIDI port is 330.
For the MPU-401 and OPL-3 (or 4), the I/O addresses are 330 and 388,
but I am not in Linux and don't remember which is which. If you have
Win95 running, look in SysDevices to see. (I think MPU-401is MIDI
and is I/O 330, but...)
Then, when configuring the kernel, enter this info under sound.
Make sure to pay attention when it asks for the info - some of the
items sound like they are needed, but under the notes for each item
flags will warn you when NOT to use it for SB 16.
I wasn't sure the first time around if this was all that needed to be
done, so I configured isapnptools 1.9, edited the isapnp.conf to set
the above info, and rebooted. When isapnp ran, it said that the SB
16 was already configured - it appears the kernel does all of the
configuring at kernel boot, before rc.local or rc.serial is run.
So, to recap, although you have had trouble with the kernel config
[make sure to use make menuconfig or make xconfig (in X)], all I had
to do was just set the kernel options correctly and everything was
OK.
